Philadelphia 76ers fan James ‘Big Daddy’ Brister on Ben Simmons

AUSTRALIANS, meet James Brister.

Going by the nickname ‘Big Daddy’ and widely regarded as the Philadelphia 76ers’ No.1 fan, Brister has a message of gratitude for fans down under following Melbourne export Ben Simmons led the Sixers to a 107-86 thrashing of Utah Jazz on Tuesday.

Simmons’ career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds – his 11th double-double in the first 16 games of his rookie NBA season – had Big Daddy fired up.

“Hey, what’s up, everybody? It’s Big Daddy from the Sixers,” Brister told The Daily Telegraph.

Feeding off the raucous crowd, Sixers stars JJ Redick (20 points), Joel Embiid (15 points and 11 rebounds) and Robert Covington (13 points) brought it home.

With the 76ers failing to make the NBA playoffs since 2012, Brister is ecstatic Simmons – taken by the Sixers as the No.1 overall pick in the 2016 draft – has helped the former cellar-dwellers to a 9-7 record and seventh in the Eastern Conference.

But soon it could be renowned for housing one of the world’s most sophisticated sporting facilities — one worth $350 million.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The Cape Otway Road Australia (CORA) development will be the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere, with the development catering to nine of Australia’s most popular sports.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Athletes from AFL, football, rugby, cricket and tennis will benefit from the world-class fields, while swimmers, gymnasts, runners and cyclists will also be catered for.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

It’s hoped the state of the art facility will not only encourage the world’s greatest athletes to descend on the Surf Coast, but also attract a new host of tourists with four and five-star accommodation also part of the mega development.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The construction of the facility is tipped to begin by mid-2018 so that global sports leaders at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are encouraged to visit the CORA site while at the games.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

A sports science hub incorporating a plethora of sports science laboratories and an environment chamber will also be part of the development, which will include an MCG-sized oval, two soccer pitches, eight tennis courts and an aquatic centre with a 50m pool.

The managing director of Proleisure — one of the global leaders in sporting facilities — Jon Stemp suggested CORA would be a breakthrough in the elite sporting market.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“In the past 10 years, Proleisure has been lucky enough to have led the global research for, and overseen, the design and development of some of the world’s leading sporting projects, such as the City Football Academy in Manchester, England, and the UFC Institute in Las Vegas,” Stemp said.

“These roles have given us unique insights into the ingredients necessary to develop globally relevant and successful projects.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“In my opinion, CORA will have the world’s media talking about this project in Victoria and set a new global benchmark for sport and wellbeing.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The CORA facility will be located south of Lake Modewarre — around 100km from Melbourne and 27km from the Great Ocean Road.

Cambage was charged with “unduly rough play” for an incident with UC Capitals centre Mistie Bass last weekend during the Boomers’ 30-point win on Saturday at the State Basketball Centre.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Cambage’s offence was graded by the GRP as “intentional with high impact contact occurring to the body”, resulting in a two-game ban being handed down. However the star Boomer accepted a one-week suspension with an early guilty plea on Wednesday morning.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

It means Cambage will be available for the Boomers’ crunch clash against the Sydney Uni Flames on Sunday as part of the WNBL’s Cluster Round.

Boomers general manager Justin Nelson said Cambage and the club accepted the GRP’s decision.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Liz has a lot of terrific qualities on and off the court and constantly goes above and

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Liz accepts the finding of the GRP and we look forward to seeing her back in

action this Sunday.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Bass was forced to the bench on the weekend during the second quarter of the Boomers’ win after she appeared to cop a knee from Cambage underneath the basket that subsequently left her with a corked hamstring. The American then had her hamstring heavily taped up and returned to the court later in the quarter, but was forced off again in the third term as she struggled to run out the injury.

“We’re also pleased Mistie is OK and was able to play out the game,” Nelson said

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The GRP was called upon by the WNBL after the Capitals reported “two alleged incidents” involving Cambage.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“The University of Canberra Capitals have reported two alleged incidents that took place in Saturday’s match against Melbourne,” Capitals general manager Lucille Bailie told foxsports.com.au on Tuesday.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“They have been referred to the WNBL, which is investigating the matter.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The second Cambage incident raised by the Capitals from the match was reviewed by the GRP but not acted upon.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The setback comes with Cambage in MVP-like form for the Boomers, averaging more points than any other player in the league so far this season. She finished with 32 points and 11 rebounds against the Capitals, less than a week after draining a season-high 44 points against the Adelaide Lightning.

A WNBL spokeswoman confirmed to foxsports.com.au on Tuesday morning that head of WNBL Sally Phillips had been working closely with general manager of competitions Paul Maley around what the options were and the processes that will be taken.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The incident has gathered legs on social media over recent days, with Bass ‘liking’ two tweets she had been tagged into that criticised Cambage’s actions.

Both the Capitals and the Boomers will take part in this weekend’s inaugural WNBL Cluster Round, which will see all eight of the league’s teams descend on the State Basketball Centre for four games across two days.

On Saturday, the Capitals will be out to break a nine-game losing streak when they take on the eighth-placed Bendigo Spirit, before the Dandenong Rangers face the Adelaide Lightning. Both games will be live on FOX SPORTS.

On Sunday, the Perth Lynx and Townsville Fire will meet before the Boomers-Flames clash.
