A little boy in Massachusetts was killed over the weekend after he was attacked by two pit bulls.
Police responded to a call Saturday evening of a child being attacked by an animal in Lowell.
According to a 911 call, obtained by local media outlet WFXT, several neighbors reported that a dog was mauling a child and would not let go.
When police arrived, the boy was dead, the outlet reports.
Authorities are not releasing the child’s name but said he was 7 years old.
“I heard someone yelling ‘It’s my baby! It’s my baby!’ and I come to find out that it was my daughter’s friend’s son,” neighbor Annmarie Dizazzo told the outlet.
Residents in the area told investigators the boy was playing outside with his older brother and the dogs were in a fenced off area. They said the child was either trying to pet the dogs or jumped over the fence.
Investigators are trying to determine if the child may have been dragged in by the dogs.
Roger Rodriguez told WHDH the person who owns the dogs was hysterical.
“She was crying and crying. We tried to comfort her,” he said. “I pray for the neighborhood.”
Following the attack, one of the pit bulls charged an officer. The officer shot the dog but it kept running. It was later found and euthanized. Animal control has custody of the second pit bull.
Police are still investigating the incident and no charges have been filed.
