Sydney FC defender on why Wanderers scored opening goal

JORDY Buijs admits he was relieved Sydney FC came away from the derby with a point after taking responsibility for the opening goal.

Wanderers striker Oriol Riera scored a superb header inside the opening five minutes to give the visitors a shock lead at Allianz Stadium, but the Spaniard was allowed far too much room in the box and Buijs knows he needs to learn from that error.

“I was not sharp in the first five minutes and they scored a very nice, quality goal to be honest. He is good player,” Buijs said. “I was two metres close to him, which is too far — I need to be closer. I think I was responsible for the first goal”

SOUTH AFRICA EYEING POTENTIAL BREAKTHROUGH ROO

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

MARK Bosnich says with South Africa eyeing Kearyn Baccus, the Socceroos must consider capping the Wanderers midfielder.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The talented midfielder has enjoyed a strong start to the A-League season, playing a key role in Western Sydney’s early resurgence.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

That included a standout performance in Saturday night’s Sydney Derby, where the Wanderers drew 2-2 with Sydney FC.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The 26-year-old has previously rejected overtures from South Africa, his country of birth, with Baccus telling News Corp he hoped to one day feature for Australia.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Former Australia goalkeeper Bosnich said the Socceroos needed to ensure Baccus was capped to remove the temptation of playing international football for Bafana Bafana.

“},{“contentType”:”IMAGE”,”link”:”https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/00f12ab8d05e47f43ab1e964d128c8ec”,”title”:”Kearyn Baccus. (Photo by Jason McCawley/Getty Images)”,”originalSource”:”Getty Images”,”width”:650,”height”:488},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“After his performance last night, I would have thought he would have been in the frame to be looked at, definitely,” Bosnich said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“And if South Africa’s knocking on his door, we need to cap him as soon as possible.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Because players of that talent … if they do happen to level out in terms of their consistency level, for me, they’re too valuable to let go.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“So I would have definitely thought that obviously Ange would be looking for other options — we’ve got obviously Jackson Irvine, there’s (Massimo) Luongo as well. So there’s all them types of players as well.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“But he’d be looking at players every week I would have thought — he should be.”

“},{“contentType”:”IMAGE”,”link”:”https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/2d1e2a73d9d256ca5b035467eae3be35″,”title”:”Kearyn Baccus. (Photo by Cameron Spencer/Getty Images)”,”originalSource”:”Getty Images”,”width”:650,”height”:488},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Former Socceroo John Kosmina said Baccus’ position as a holding midfielder set him apart from some of Australia’s other midfield options.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

That said, he favoured Victory recruit Rhys Williams for that position ahead of Baccus.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“They’re (Irvine and Luongo) not holders — you need someone that just sits there and screens a bit,” Kosmina said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“That’s what Mark Milligan’s role is.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“But if you had to pick someone from the A-League, you’d pick Rhys Williams tomorrow.”

ROAR SLAMMED FOR HORROR DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:””},{“contentType”:”IMAGE”,”link”:”https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/69617fd61a7c924d017f7249b947a0c4″,”title”:”Roar players appear dejected. (AAP Image/Dan Peled)”,”originalSource”:”AAP”,”width”:650,”height”:488},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

FORMER Socceroo Ned Zelic has slammed Brisbane Roar for its defensive showing against Newcastle.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Brisbane conceded two goals in the 2-1 loss but Newcastle had some other chances to punish them further.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Zelic said the Roar’s defence was “non-existent” at times during the game, including when it was cut open for Roy O’Donovan’s opening goal.

“},{“contentType”:”VIDEO”,”marbleApiEnv”:”prod”,”playerType”:”player”,”videoId”:648989},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Were you shocked at how Brisbane came out and defended?” Zelic said on Sunday Shootout.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“At times it was just ridiculous how easily Newcastle were getting through and from simple passing as well — spreading it out wide.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“And we know as well. we’ve seen it in the early games from Newcastle, they really do have a lot of urgency in that advanced area, really attack quickly, not too many touches to get the ball into the box and it worked out perfectly with O’Donovan on the end of really nice play from Nabbout and Vujica.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“But the fact that Brisbane were just nowhere, just non-existent.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Former Roar man Dimi Petratos scored a fantastic long-range goal for the matchwinner — with Brisbane’s defence bizarrely backing off to give him room to shoot.

“},{“contentType”:”VIDEO”,”marbleApiEnv”:”prod”,”playerType”:”player”,”videoId”:649004},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Zelic said it was a particularly poor defensive effort.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“You saw it as well with Petratos’ goal — pretty much defensively, what they’re doing there is hoping that he does’t get it on target,” he said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It’s crazy.”

Both teams were chasing their first win and the Mariners controlled the opening 20 minutes of each half.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

They only had one goal to show for it which came in the 15th minute courtesy of Wout Brama.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Glory took a while to settle in both halves but began to build momentum in the 70th minute with a goal to captain Andy Keogh.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

That was set up by Adam Taggart who then scored the winner after an otherwise horror game in front of goal.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

He missed five gettable chances before final scoring in the 85th minute to give his side a hard fought win against a brave Mariners.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Central Coast should have scored after 45 seconds.

Kwabena Appiah beat the offside trap and placed the ball perfectly for Asdrubal to finish – but the Spaniard fell over.

The visitors were rewarded when Connor Pain sent a comfortable pass to a wide open Brama in the box, the Dutchman curling it into the top of the goal for a 1-0 advantage.Glory did settle before halftime with Taggart fluffing a sitter in the 34th minute when he tangled his feet in front of a wide open goal.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The Mariners came out well in the second half again but Perth worked their way into the match. It was a Taggart cross in the 70th minute that Keogh converted with a good header that levelled scores.

He scored himself after a good ball by the returning Shane Lowry, nailing a good shot from the edge of the box one-on-one with ‘keeper Thomas Glover.Perth are back on the road to play Sydney FC on Friday while Central Coast have three of the next four at home starting Sunday against Melbourne Victory.Glory coach Kenny Lowe came away happy with his team’s first win of the season.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It was a good performance. I thought we started a little bit slow but as the game wore on we looked dangerous and created chances,” Lowe said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“On another day, maybe we could have had a couple more and maybe got one earlier than we did.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Mariners coach Paul Okon liked a lot of what his team did but knows they can’t afford to cough up such soft goals.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“We can’t think that if we continue to give goals away like that we are going to win football games,” Okon said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It’s disappointing because I thought our effort was outstanding especially in the first 20 minutes. “When you have those opportunities you have to punish teams and we didn’t do that. Then in the end those moments where we make crazy decisions that cost us goals is very disappointing.”
