JORDAN Spieth is on the cusp of securing the third leg of golf’s Grand Slam but he has a fellow American chasing his heels entering the final round.

The world No. 3 sits atop the leaderboard at 11-under, which is three shots ahead of compatriot Matt Kuchar. The lead held by Spieth isn’t insurmountable, but all signs are pointing to a Spieth-Kuchar face-off for the 146th Open Championship.

The two Americans are set to tee off at 11:30pm (AEST); the last pairing of Round 4’s action.

JASON Day admits he behaved like a spoilt brat after believing he had missed the British Open halfway cut.

SPIETH IN CONTROL: American star leads by three

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Day stormed out of Royal Birkdale without explaining his spectacular implosion in the second round, when the world No.6 leaked five shots in his final three holes to slump out of contention.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

But the popular Aussie apologised after a third-round 65 sent him charging up the leaderboard into a respectable share of 18th spot.

“},{“contentType”:”IMAGE”,”link”:”https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/7d2372cc647f8f8c9c0bc6eb782fba04″,”title”:”Jason Day found plenty of trouble in his second round.”,”originalSource”:”AFP”,”width”:650,”height”:366},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It wasn’t so much that I was angry at thinking I’m missing the cut,” Day said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It was more so I was angry with I was even par with three holes to go – and I came home in a coffin.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“I was honestly thinking I could par 16, birdie 17, par 18, get it to one-under par and I’m right there.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The 2015 US PGA champion and former world No.1 was shattered, having hoped his star presence on the leaderboard at the halfway mark would send a warning to the field.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“I come into a golf course such as today, you can get something going pretty quickly and then you throw your name up there,” Day said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“You’ve won some tournaments in the past and people know that you’ve finished off strong. Hopefully that gives them a little bit of incentive to push on or pull back little bit.

“},{“contentType”:”IMAGE”,”link”:”https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/6a65a2ee576be84e4f97273ddb386fad”,”title”:”Jason Day hit back with a third round 65 at Royal Birkdale.”,”originalSource”:”Getty Images”,”width”:650,”height”:488},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“So I was more angry of how I finished just because I kind of shot myself in the foot and you can’t do that in major championships, especially when you’re trying to win a tournament.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Day said his agent came up with a good analogy for his second-round crash.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It’s like the war in the fog,” he said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“So with everything going around you, you’re trying to think straight but you can’t think straight because there’s so much going on and, unfortunately, I just didn’t quite have my head switched on the last three holes.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Day said he consoled himself with a movie and ice cream before returning to record his lowest-ever round at The Open after a quiet pep talk from his wife.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It was The Expendables 2, so it was a bit of action,” he said.

“},{“contentType”:”VIDEO”,”marbleApiEnv”:”prod”,”playerType”:”player”,”videoId”:634296},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“I was supposed to go to the gym yesterday. I’m glad I didn’t because I probably would have squatted 500 pounds, I was that angry.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“We’re in a great position in life. To be able to play at Royal Birkdale in a major championship, we’re very gifted. We’re very blessed.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“And after I ate some ice cream, I became a lot happier.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“My wife was saying, “Just go out there and just play. You’ve got nothing to lose now, obviously. You’re dead last, anyway, no matter what you’re trying to prove.’

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It was great to get out there and shoot the score I did.”

A spirited Jason Day (five-over) fell by the wayside, while fellow heavyweight Adam Scott (three-over) hung tough but still finished the second round nine strokes adrift of the lead following a four-over 74. American star Jordan Spieth is the outright leader at six-under, after carding a one-under 69 in Round 2.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It was just difficult. I don’t know how else to assess it,” Scott said. “Tough winds for this golf course, too. I know it’s allowed to blow a lot around here but, out of the southeast, it made some angles pretty tough, fairways tough to hit.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It was really challenging out there.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Both Aussie stars began the day only four shots off the pace, but Day’s six-over-par 76 after he finished six, six, six left the former world No.1 out of contention and right on the five-over cut line.

Major championship rookie Andrew Dodt is one shot adrift of Scott as the best Aussie, carding 75 today to finish four-over.

Marc Leishman (76) dropped to five-over, while fellow US PGA Tour star Aaron Baddeley also finished at five-over carding a 76. Scott Hend joined them at five-over after a 74 today.

At seven-over, Adam Bland (72) and Open rookie Matthew Griffin (77) missed the cut, while Cameron Smith (75) is also gone after slumping to nine-over.

OPEN SECOND ROUND, MAIN REPORT

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Jordan Spieth has overcome crazy cross-winds, squalls and a 25-minute rain delay to seize the outright halfway lead at the British Open.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The reigning Australian Open champion and world No.3 fashioned an eventful two- under-par 69 in the wet and wild weather to climb to six-under for the tournament.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Chasing the third leg of the fabled career grand slam, Spieth is two strokes ahead of fellow American Matt Kuchar (71) after lighting up gloomy Southport with a late eagle three to burst free from the pack.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It was a really solid day,” said the 2015 Masters and US Open champion.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

With his challengers coming and going, Spieth enjoys a three-shot advantage over US Open champion Brooks Koepka (72) and Ian Poulter, whose dogged even-par round of 70 has the Englishman dreaming of going one better than his second at Birkdale in 2008.

Scot Richie Ramsay (70) is fifth at two under, while the resurgent Rory McIlroy (68) is “ecstatic” to be back in the red at one-under and in a four-way share of sixth.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

But the man they all must catch is Spieth, who once again showcased his brilliant short game to take command.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Just when he began to slide down the leaderboard, Spieth’s signature scrambling swiftly turned his fortunes around.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

He made bogey on the ninth to fall into a share of the lead, and was headed for another – or worse – on No.10 when he drove into a pot bunker, blasted out sideways and hit his third shot short and left of the green. But as the rain picked up, Spieth chipped in for par, then rolled in a 10-metre birdie putt on 11 followed that with a tee shot to less than a metre on 12. Suddenly he enjoyed a two-shot lead.

His advantage was back to one after a bogey on 14, but a bounce-back eagle extended his lead to three before a three-putt bogey on 16 gave his chasers hope.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

With winds of almost 50km/h gusting through the course, Kuchar earlier mixed four bogeys with three birdies and hoped to kick back in his hotel and watch the afternoon carnage unfold.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“There’s a whole lot of trouble to be had,” he said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Spieth, though, defied a torrential downpour – which led to ground staff needing almost half an hour to sponge the rain-soaked greens – to assume control with his eagle on the par-5 15th.

“},{“contentType”:”VIDEO”,”marbleApiEnv”:”prod”,”playerType”:”player”,”videoId”:634130},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Really nice to capitalise on it,” Spieth said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“I was able to knock that putt in, get me to seven-under, which was a place I didn’t think I’d get to today starting the day.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“And we got in at six (under) and it was a very, very solid day. Very pleased with the score.”
