THE Courier-Mail racing editor Nathan Exelby looks for the winners at Doomben on Saturday.
HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
TOWNSVILLE: FAB PAIR RUNS UP WINS & MILEAGE
Track: Good 4. Rail: 2m out. Weather: Fine
RACE 5: NFIA PLATE (1600m)
C3 SW, 1.32pm
In the run: Pinolino holds a prominent spot from the inside. Stella Gris will cross from the wide gate and expect Manndawi to also roll forward.
Take note: Pinolino clocked a strong time rating by comparison with other winners on the day at Doomben. This doesn’t look too much harder and she might be a mare on the up. Jockey Matt McGillivray has been riding in great form and should give her a gun run on the speed.
Did you know: Manndawi was Group 1 placed as a 3YO in France, but has disappointed in Australia. First start for Matt Dunn was encouraging at Ipswich and he will be fitter here. Some of his Victorian ratings are still good enough.
Early money: Sweet Adaline is the best backed, into $3.60 from an opening $5 quote.
Nathan’s tip: PINOLINO $5.50
Nathan’s danger: Manndawi $11
RACE 7: SMIRNOFF PRIDE (1600m)
In the run: Windmill Follies will be prominent. Reset Me I’m Wild should be right there and Gypsy Miss won’t be far away.
Take note: Reset Me I’m Wild won a hot form race on debut at Pakenham (runner-up then won at Flemington and Sandown) before getting the job done at the Gold Coast. Has upside.
Did you know: Eat My Trust (won), Kubis (2nd) and Meet And Greet (4th) all met in the same race on July 8. Eat My Trust had a saloon run through on the turn without spending a dime, while Meet And Greet ran into trouble in the straight. Kubis was best of those on speed and fought on strongly, so think the latter two can turn the tables. Meet And Greet gets the services of in-form Brad Stewart (pictured) this time.
Early money: Reset Me I’m Wild in from $8.
Nathan’s tip: MEET AND GREET $5
Nathan’s danger: Reset Me I’m Wild $6
RACE 9: #BNERACES PLATE (1200m)
2&3YO SW, 4.12pm
In the run: Big field but not huge pace. Impregnable and Excalibrator will be handy. Expect Legadema to be closer.
Take note: Oink is the best-weighted horse in the field, meeting Publishing Power 3kg better for their Caloundra meeting. Prioritise is also suited after giving away weight to all rivals bar one last week.
Did you know: This was run for the first time last year and the lone 2YO in the race, River Racer, was successful. Dynastic, Saxton Rock and Legadema represent the babies this time, with Excelebrazione also there if he secures a run. Saxton Rock has been tried at big odds to win this, firming from $31 in some places to be $12.
Early money: Prioritise is the market pick at the moment, but suspect they will back a few of these.
Nathan’s tip: OINK $5.50
Nathan’s danger: Prioritise $4.20
RACE 10: EVENTS@BRC HCP (1200m)
In the run: Backslapper should be prominent. Agapantha and Soldi Domani will be handy, while Lucky Meteor should be a lot closer than he was at Grafton. Magnus Cor will need luck from a tricky gate.
Take note: Backslapper is on the quick back-up after being heavily backed to win here last week. Will make his own luck on the speed, whereas the other favourite Havasay likely to be midfield or worse.
Did you know: Magnus Cor gives Tiffani Brooker (pictured) a chance to round out her memorable season in style here. Drops 5kg on the solid first-up run and has a number of ratings from last two preps that also stack up strongly for this.
Early money: Backslapper easily best backed again with punters throwing in after filling up on him last week.
Nathan’s tip: BACKSLAPPER $3.50
Nathan’s danger: Magnus Cor $14
