SHE TELEVISES HER SCREEN MEMORIES

As a child, I had recurring nightmares in my parents’ little house until we moved and the dreams stopped. I dreamed of a TV where I saw a smaller version of myself looking at the big me. The screen was red and a scary old man in a rocking chair was laughing this evil laugh. Sometimes the TV screen was snowy. Please decode this dream.

Suzanna B., Central Valley, Calif.

The TV set in your recurring dream is an apt symbol of a screen memory wherein an inconsequential event is substituted for a traumatic one. In this way, the dream screens or disguises from memory an underlying troubling, objectionable perception. In this view, the snowy static on the TV screen symbolizes repression: You did not wish to see what really happened. In that screen, memories are often tied to infantile sexuality. There may have been past traumatic abuse. Such violation diminishes the self and would explain seeing yourself as small or minimized. Similarly, the red screen signifies anger. In this scenario, the evil man is the aggressor, the one who rocked your world, but not in a good way.

SHE NEEDS TO KNOW WHO SHE IS

I dreamed I was pursuing a career in animation. I went on interviews until I saw a girl hiding in the bushes near my apartment. Talking to her, she seemed confused. I invited her in and learned she had amnesia. I tried to help her make sense of who she was and how she had lost her memories. I hoped to find information on her. One night at the theater, she pulled a small box and key from her purse. I became disoriented when she opened it. What does this mean?

In that to animate is to bring to life, the dream reveals the wish to make sense of who you are in reality. The interviews are a means of discourse with the self. In this view, the girl you talk to behind the bushes with amnesia is self-referential. There is a need to remember or reclaim past memories that have been repressed. Similarly, the key symbol represents that which opens what is locked and closed from view. Becoming disoriented when the box opens is a sign that within it were memories better left forgotten.
